Educational Solutions, Inc. has operated from New York City since 1968. It was established and exists to publish, disseminate, and represent the life-work of an educator named Caleb Gattegno (1911-1988). Gattegno brought into focus the human learning process viewed from the perspective of humans-as-energy. This, along with its implications, is Gattegno's distinct contribution to education.
Educational Solutions, Inc. has served as the base for realizing Gattegno's vision in two major ways: i) by offering workshops and seminars for Teacher Education in 'The Subordination of Teaching to Learning,' and, ii) by making available the materials that help in implementing the approach. The effort to bring about this kind of change in education could be accelerated with the involvement and support of people who are convinced that education must be accountable to every student regarding his/her human potential to continue to function as a learner and thus be an asset to society.
Gattegno's approach is an educationally sound alternative because it doesn't let teaching lose sight of learning. It is a practical alternative for it obtains 'good' results by maintaining interaction between teaching and learning. It is a realistic alternative because it serves autonomous learning through the teaching-learning of the basic school subjects which one needs to function in society. It is a common sense alternative since it works directly with human energy (the potential for learning which connects individual human beings to themselves, to the world around them, and to the past as well as to that which is yet to come).
Gattegno's work points in the direction in which education can and must evolve if it is to be instrumental in contributing to the well-being of humanity.
