Dr. Caleb Gattegno (1911 - 1988)

Dr. Gattegno was born in Alexandria, Egypt, November 11, 1911. He received doctorate degrees in mathematics and psychology from Swiss and French universities respectively. From 1937 to 1945, he served as director of the Institute of Higher Scientific Studies, In Cairo, Egypt. Between 1945 and 1957 he was a professor of mathematics, first at Liverpool University, and later, at the Institute of Education, London University, U.K. From 1957 to 1958, he was a member of the Technical Assistance Board of the United Nations, directing the preparation of textbooks in Ethiopia. Dr. Gattegno translated two of Jean Piaget's books from French into English, and authored several books on education and other topics of human interest. From 1968 until his death in 1988, he lived in New York City, and served as president of Educational Solutions, inc.

Dr. Gattegno's lifelong interest in the study of the dynamics of human learning led him to develop an approach to teaching known as THE SUBORDINATION OF TEACHING TO LEARNING. An important part of the approach is a body of teaching techniques and materials Gattegno designed for the teaching-learning of literacy in one's mother tongue, world languages, and mathematics. According to Gattegno's approach teaching is there to serve the learning rather than to dominate it.

As president of Educational Solutions, Dr. Gattegno traveled extensively, meeting with teachers and getting them interested in learning to teach in ways which humanize teaching, and, in the process, lead to excellence as well as maximum yield in learning.
